Nazim Beykishiyev is one of Azerbaijan’s leading theatre artists. He was born in 1948 and is a graduate of the Azim Azimzade Art School; he continued his education at the State Institute of Theatre Arts (Moscow). He was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR from 1975 and, from 1979, a member of the Union of Theatre Workers of Azerbaijan. In 1984 he was awarded the State Prize of Azerbaijan for his work on Huseyn Javid’s play Iblis (director: People’s Artist of the USSR Mehti Mammadov). In the course of his career Nazim Beykishiyev has worked in the leading theatres of Azerbaijan and with its most renowned directors. He has designed sets for performances of Snowball Games in Summer by Vagif Samedoglu, Hamlet and Murderer by Elchin, Afet by Huseyn Javid, Born Again by Mir Jalal and others. His credits also include sets for performances in Ankara and Vienna; in all, he has been responsible for the design on more than 100 productions. People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Nazim Beykishiyev has a range of interests which extend beyond theatre: his paintings have been exhibited in the USA, Great Britain, Turkey, Russia, Germany, France and Hungary. They are also in private collections in many countries. He has had solo exhibitions in London in 1998 and in Moscow (Manege) in 2001. This is Nazim Beykishiyev’s first solo exhibition in Baku. Most of the paintings shown here are on display for the first time; they were completed during the last three years. As he admits, even when he tries to paint in dark tones, he is unable to do so; his hands are drawn to the light....
