An exhibition devoted to the 150th anniversary of the great satirical poet Mirza Alakbar Sabir opened in the Museum Centre’s Art Gallery on 5 June. 55 works illustrating the celebrated ‘Hophopname’ were on display. Adalet Valiyev, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism declared in his speech that the exhibition was an important and significant event for our culture. He remarked on people’s affection for the poet and the state’s support for Sabir and his work. Mr Valiyev listed the projects undertaken following President Ilham Aliyev’s decree "On the 150th anniversary of M. A. Sabir". Aghaali Ibrahimov, People's Artist and Secretary of the Artists Union; Salhab Mammadov, Vice-Rector of the Art Academy; and Ziyadkhan Aliyev, Honoured Art Worker and art critic, described the unique creativity of People's Artist Arif Husseinov and Honoured Art Worker Bayram Hajizade in devising a new version of ‘Hophopname’ with their illustrations, noting how the artists had complemented Sabir's eternal poetry and satire. The works displayed in the Museum Centre’s Art Gallery were in the form of paintings by miniaturist and artistic director of the Khatai Miniature Art Gallery Arif Husseinov and cartoons by Bayram Hajizade. They captured the aim, motif and purpose of the great Sabir's poems which laugh and provoke laughter, which cry and provoke tears; they conveyed both light and dark sides of the poems to the viewer. The catalogue of the works presented in the exhibition was printed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Artists Union, the Union of Caricature Artists and the Museum Centre.
The exhibition continued until 15 June.
