A film evening was held on 9 April 2010, in the Assembly Hall of the Museum Center, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Azerbaijani People’s Artist, laureate of USSR and Azerbaijan State Awards, Leyla Badirbeyli.
Leyla Badirbeyli was born in Baku in 1920. Leyla khanim first entered the stage of the Central Workers’ House in Baku at the age of 8. Even as a teenager, she acted in Moscow director D. Vertov’s documentary film, ‘Three Songs about Lenin’, playing a Pioneer girl. From 1937-42 she was a soloist in the song and dance ensemble of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonia.
In 1942, Leyla Badirbeyli, before going onto the stage of the professional theatre, acted in feature films such as ‘The Naughty Group’ (1937), ‘Sabuhi’ (1941) and ‘Gift’ (1942).
In 1945, her playing of Gulchohra in the film comedy ‘Arshin Mal Alan’ brought her universal popularity. Especially for her work in this film, she was awarded the USSR State Award in 1946.
Her roles in the films ‘Fatali Khan’ and ‘Koroglu’ were not just of slim and faithful wives of their husbands, but were also brave and valiant comrades.
Leyla Badirbeyli acted in films with a broad range of subjects and her heroines were of different character. She acted in almost 50 films, such as: ‘Her Great Heart’ (Khalida), ‘Meeting’ (Bilgeyis), ‘Crazy Kur’ (Zarnigar), ‘Creeping Shadows’ (Leyla), ‘Sevil’ (Tafta), ‘On the Trail of the Charvadars’ (Mafruza), ‘A Dervish Blows Up Paris’ (Shahrabanu khanim), ‘Asif, Vasif, Agasif’ (Grandma) and ‘Greeting from the Other World’ (Kerbalayi Fatma) etc. Leyla khanim created the roles of our mothers, sisters and grandmothers with a particular professionalism.
The outstanding theatre and cinema actress, and beautiful person, Leyla Badirbeyli was an artist who was forever loved by her people and was a true People’s Artist.
